ABOUT
Jessica O. Matthews is a Nigerian-American inventor and entrepreneur, best known as the founder and CEO of Uncharted Power, a sustainable infrastructure company specializing in renewable energy solutions. Born on February 13, 1988, in Poughkeepsie, New York, she demonstrated an early interest in innovative solutions to global challenges. Matthews holds a degree in Psychology and Economics from Harvard University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. She currently resides in New York City, USA.
BEFORE RICHES
While attending Harvard College, Matthews co-invented the SOCCKET ball, an energy-generating soccer ball that provides off-grid power for the developing world. This invention was inspired by her experiences in Nigeria, where she observed frequent power outages and the reliance on hazardous diesel generators. The SOCCKET harnesses kinetic energy during play, storing it for later use as a power source. After graduating, Matthews worked at Crowdtap, a marketing firm, before fully dedicating herself to entrepreneurial ventures aimed at addressing energy accessibility.
HOW SHE MADE 1st MILLION
In 2011, at the age of 22, Matthews founded Uncharted Power (formerly Uncharted Play) to develop and promote renewable energy solutions. The company's flagship product, the SOCCKET ball, garnered international attention for its innovative approach to energy generation. Under Matthews' leadership, Uncharted Power expanded its focus to broader infrastructure projects, integrating renewable energy into everyday objects and systems. In 2016, she secured $7 million in Series A funding, making her one of the few Black female entrepreneurs to achieve such a milestone. Matthews' dedication to sustainable development and her ability to merge technology with social impact have established her as a prominent figure in the renewable energy sector.
