ABOUT
Nadia Murad is a Yazidi human rights activist and the founder of Nadia's Initiative, an organization dedicated to advocating for survivors of genocide and sexual violence.
BEFORE RICHES
Born and raised in the village of Kocho in the Sinjar District of northern Iraq, Nadia Murad grew up in a close-knit Yazidi community. In August 2014, at the age of 19, her village was attacked by the Islamic State (ISIS). During this assault, many Yazidi men, including six of Nadia's brothers and half-brothers, were killed, and women, including Nadia, were abducted and subjected to severe abuse. Nadia was held captive for approximately three months before managing to escape.
HOW SHE MADE 1st MILLION
After her escape, Nadia Murad became a vocal advocate for the Yazidi community and survivors of sexual violence. In 2016, she founded Nadia's Initiative, aiming to provide advocacy and assistance to communities in crisis, with a focus on the redevelopment of the Sinjar region and support for survivors of sexual violence. Her relentless efforts have brought international attention to the plight of the Yazidis and the use of sexual violence in conflict. In recognition of her work, she was appointed as the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Goodwill Ambassador for the Dignity of Survivors of Human Trafficking in 2016 and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018.
